Memories of Harada Tongs roshi
My years in a Japanese Zen monastery
Publisher: Asoka
Autobiographical Account; impression of life in a Japanese Zen monastery, an old Zen master and the Zen tradition. Supplemented with Zen texts and Dharma speeches.
In 1999 Ciska Matthes left Amsterdam for Japan to submit to the strict rules of the Zen monastery Bukkokuji. That meant getting up very early, many hours of zazen (sitting meditation), talking as little as possible, dealing with lack of sleep, icy cold and aching knees. The wise lessons of the old Zen master inspired her to adopt a whole new way of thinking.
This book is the unique account of six years of intensive Zen training, seen through the eyes of a stubborn young woman. Daily life with all its rituals and the striking encounters with the Zen master are graphically described. Sometimes very entertaining, with a good dose of self-mockery, at other times profound and moving: this is a heartwarming book that will touch and inspire the reader.

Ciska Matthes (1964) grew up in Amsterdam in a spiritually oriented family. Her father was a philosopher and her mother a dancer and sannyasin. At the age of 32 Ciska discovered Zen meditation and started an adventurous journey (literally and figuratively) in Buddhism. Her stay in Bukkokuji, the monastery in Japan, changed her whole way of thinking and the teachings of the Zen master Harada Tangen Roshi made an indelible impression. After her return she also focused on vipassana and giving mindfulness training. Only after the death of Harada Tangen roshi in 2018 did she feel ready to write about her experiences in Japan. That is how this book was finally born. Today, Ciska practices and guides mindfulness, yoga and meditation in Amsterdam.
