Leigh Brasington
A Practical Guide to Practicing the Jhanas
Publisher: Ashoka
Leigh Brasington was born in 1949 and grew up in Leland, Mississippi. He attended Rhodes College in Memphis and received a BA in Mathematics in 1971. With this, he embarked on a 35-year career of 'paid computer games'. After moving to San Francisco in 1974, he regularly took the time to travel: from 1979-81 he circumnavigated the world for three years, toured Australia and Asia for a year in 1988, and then went on another six-month world tour in 1998. He started meditating in 1985 and eventually became the oldest North American student of the Rev. Ayya Khema. He received her teaching authorization and started guiding retreats in 1997. He has since taught the jhånas and developed insight in more than a hundred retreats. He retired as a software engineer in late 2008, and over the next three years spent twenty months in the Insight Meditation Society's Forest Refuge. During these long retreats, he conducted detailed research into his own experiences with the jhånas and their descriptions in the suttas. This book is the result of this study combined with years of practice in the practice and teaching of the jhanas.

Very nice to see the refinements of the states and jhanas interpreted. So helpful and supportive in their own process. Thanks for the nice conversation.
🙏
Thank you Karin, Gerholf and Joost for this enlightening dialogue.
Nice to know that there will be a course from Karin somewhere this year via 30NOW, but it seems that for a shamata retreat you have to go abroad or can only go to a foreign teacher for this.
Is it true that there are no Dutch-language retreats for this in the Netherlands?
Very beautiful, enlightening and inspiring. Thank you all.
