Live Lecture with Phap Xa
Teachings of Zen Master Linji (Japanese)
Zen master Linji (Japanese name: Rinzai) lived and taught in China in the ninth century. He saw many monks studying, but making little or no progress on the path of healing and transformation. Therefore, his style of teaching was very direct and pragmatic. Although he knew the teachings of the Buddha very well, he saw that many monks gathered far too much knowledge, without taking the time to digest and put these teachings into practice.
Master Linji's goal was to help us stop looking outside ourselves and realize that everything we are looking for can be found in the present moment. Buddha, enlightenment, peace and happiness can only be found here and now. His teachings are a great and precious gift; a bitter and effective medicine to heal us.
This Sunday evening we will look at some passages from Master Linji's teachings.

The sound of a gong or bell during a live session depends on a few factors:
- The local Zoom microphone settings at the attendant. For example, with Zoom an automatic noise reduction is active as standard, which makes loud background noises less audible. This means that the sound of a gong or bell is sometimes less fully audible.
- The type of gong or bell affects the volume and type of sound.
- The type of microphone used during the live session also affects the sound (volume and pitch).
Do you have other questions or comments about the gong or bell sound? Contact Team Support.
With the Membership you have the opportunity to watch and share Live Meditations and Live Lectures within 24 hours, and often even sooner.
We advise you to sit upright while meditating. Use a chair with a firm but comfortable base; a kitchen chair is very suitable. Use a cushion if that is comfortable for you.
Body posture:
• Feet flat on the ground
• Hands resting on your thighs or in your lap
• Back straight
• Relax your shoulders
• Mouth relaxed closed
• Chin slightly retracted
• Tongue resting gently against the roof of your mouth
This creates an attentive yet relaxed attitude.
Although mindfulness has its roots in Buddhism, you don't have to be a Buddhist at all to practice mindfulness. The well-known American professor Jon Kabat-Zinn developed mindfulness training forty years ago by detaching the technique of meditation from the Buddhist context and making it accessible to Westerners. Religion is not involved in the training, but accessible meditation exercises, yoga and other ways to learn to live more consciously. Meanwhile, the MBSR (English: mindfulness-based stress reduction) and MBCT (English: mindfulness-based cognitive therapy) are very popular and fully accepted in the West.
Mindfulness refers to:
- The mindfulness training, developed to teach people to live more consciously and to deal with stress, thoughts and emotions differently.

By turning on the 'enable notifications' option, you will also receive an email when there are new comments on your posts, so you are immediately informed.
The Sangha Inbox is exclusively for our members. You can easily find it in the main menu under 'Sangha'. If you are not a member yet, take a look at 30NOW.nl/membership for more information. We offer various membership options including rates for those with limited financial resources.
During the Sangha Live evenings we come together in a live online environment, where we meet each other under the guidance of experienced facilitators. These meetings offer the opportunity to actively participate in an interactive Zoom session, where you can turn on your camera and microphone to connect with other participants. It is a beautiful way to meditate, reflect and exchange experiences together as a community.
The Sangha Live evenings are scheduled regularly and you can join them freely, as long as you have a membership. The link to the next meeting will appear on the website. Although the evenings are live and offer a lot of interactivity, they are not recorded. This means that you cannot watch the meeting afterwards, which emphasizes the experience even more as a valuable and unique moment in the here and now.
If you're not familiar with Zoom Meetings. We have a information page which guides you step by step through the process.
An important aspect of Sangha Live is that the evenings are offered on a voluntary contribution basis, also known as berth called. This is a voluntary donation that you can make via the website, as support for the platform and the sessions. This allows us to continue to organize these valuable meetings for everyone who participates.
When participating, we ask that you arrive on time and remain engaged throughout the session. This helps to keep the group cohesive and creates a shared experience. If you have any technical questions or need assistance, Team Support can be reached via 30NOW.nl/help
The substantive line that we at 30NOW Following is a contemporary approach to Buddhist meditation. Central is the practice of mindfulness or attention: an acknowledging awareness of physical and mental experiences. Although there are differences in styles and content of the meditations offered, they all align with the principle of mindfulness. Meditations are also offered that can develop other qualities such as calmness, kindness and compassion.
